Display Widgets is a plugin for WordPress that adds control to widgets. You can display or hide widgets on specific pages by simply checking boxes. No need to get unique ID numbers or type code in boxes.
As an example I have a series of 14 videos that are placed on individual pages for viewing. I want a custom menu to show only on the pages that have the video series.
I first create the custom menu with the pages for the video series. And then I place that custom menu in the widget area that I want.
And when the Display Widgets plugin is active it displays two boxes at the end of each active widget. The first box selection allows you to control whether you want to display or hide the checked boxes. For our example we want to show this menu on the checked pages. The next box is a list of the sites post and pages. At the top of this box is a selection to make if you want the widget to show for logged-out or logged-in users. Leave these unchecked to display for both. Make the selection that fits your needs. Next we'll check the pages where we want this widget to appear -- on the Landing Page video series only. When finished click save. Now the custom menu will appear only on the selected boxes for the landing page video series.
If you have several widgets in the same widget area then you can choose which ones gets displayed on which page. For instance I have a text box that displays a link to a sign-up page that I don't want to appear on the videos series pages. I can select to hide the widget and then select the video series page and this widget will not appear on those pages.
With the plugin I can even have several custom menus for different videos series in the same widget area and I can then match the menu to the individual videos series so only the correct menu will appear on the correct video series pages.
This is a nice clean and intuitive plugin.

XFN tags is an effort to add personal relationship meaning to the links. When you add a new link you can specify the relationship you have in real life with the person behind the link. XFN relationships are optional. Leaving these unchecked will not affect your links in any way. You can choose as many square boxes as you want with the exception of the first one that if checked will gray out all the others. With the lines that have the round radio buttons you can only choose one from that line. The round buttons are set on none as a default. Each one you select will be added to the rel: box and will be used in the HTML rel attribute for the link. Check the identity box if the link is to one of your websites. This is exclusive of all others so checking this box will gray out all the others. Friendship radio buttons specify four different types of relationships: Contact is someone you can get in touch with. Acquaintance is someone you exchanged greetings but not much more. Friend is someone you consider a friend. None is used as a default. Physical is for someone you've actually met face-to-face. Professional allows you to specify a professional relationship. Co-worker is someone you work with or who works at the same organization. Colleague is someone in the same field or activity. Geographical is for a geographically link to person. Co-resident is someone who shares a street address. Neighbor is someone who lives nearby, perhaps at an adjacent street address or apartment. None is used for a blank category. Family has six buttons for family relationships. Child is an offspring or someone that you have adopted. Kin is a relative. Part of your extended family. Pages are used for content that usually does not change or that remains static, such as the about me page, a contact page or a copyright page. Pages can also be used for the index or front-page of the site. Pages by default don't have categories or tags. They can, however, be placed in a parent child structure so you can have pages and sub-pages. The parent pages can be automatically added to a menu as discussed in the appearance menus video. WordPress pages are stored in a database along with posts. And unlike static html pages they're generated out of this database when a page request is made.
The add new page screen is where a page is composed. This screen consists of the page editor and attribute boxes that perform different functions that pertain to a page.
Some of these attribute boxes are hidden by default. To show these boxes click the screen options tab and check the ones you want to show or un-check any you want hidden. You also have the option of a one or two column layout. These boxes can also be managed by collapsing or expanding by clicking the bar at the top of each box. In addition they can be rearranged by mousing over the bar and holding the left mouse key down and dragging the box to a new location and releasing the mouse button.
The enter title here field is the title of the page. It is used as the slug in the permalink and it's also the header. If permalinks have not been set from the default then a change permalinks button will activate. Permalinks are detailed in the permalinks video. To avoid 404 errors, permalinks should be set before pages and post are created. When permalinks have been set then this button will be an edit button for the permalink. Also it should be noted that if you move a page to the trash it's not deleted from the database. So if you create another page with the same name a number will be added to the permalink. To avoid this, simply navigate to the all pages screen, click the trash filter link, locate the page and click delete permanently.
The editor screen is where you type and edit the actual page. It's similar to many text editors with some of the familiar features. These edit features can be expanded or collapsed by clicking the kitchen sink button located in the edit features. The screen size can be increased or reduced by mousing over the handle at the right bottom corner of the editor. This will activate a double arrow. Hold the left mouse key down and you can drag this handle to increase or decrease the size of the edit window. There is also a default editor size that can be set on writing settings screen.

If the "Anyone can register" option is set in the Membership section of the General Settings screen then users can register themselves. Regardless of that setting, you can always manually create new users from this screen. To add a user enter a username. This is a required field and this name cannot be changed. This will be the Log-in name for this user. Enter a valid e-mail address for the new user. The e-mail address is required and must be unique for each user. This email address is used for any notifications sent by the administrator of the site. You can enter the first name, the Last Name and a Website of the users but these fields are optional. The Password is required and must be entered twice, once in each text box. The All Pages screen is a table of all the created pages in alphabetical order.
The Page table can be sorted by Title, by Author or by date. You also have the option of selecting one of the filters to get a list of the pages in that filter. Pages can also be searched by entering a keyword in the search box and clicking the Search Pages button. In additional the table columns can be hidden by clicking the Screen Options tab and selecting the columns you want to show or unselecting the ones you want to hide. And there's an option to limit the number of pages that show in the table.
The bulk action feature is also available by selecting the pages, then the bulk actions and clicking the Apply button. And Pages can be filtered by date by selecting a date from the drop down and clicking the Filter button.
The TITLE of the page is what was entered in the title line when the page was created. This is an active link and can be clicked to edit that page. The page status is listed next to the page Title for any page that has not been published. Below the Title are the action links where the page can be edited, or edited using the Quick edit, sent to the Trash or Viewed.
The Author column is the username of the person who wrote the page. This is also a link and when clicked the author link causes all the pages from that author to be displayed in the Table, allowing a Bulk Action to be applied to all pages for that author.
The Comment Bubble shows the number of comments for that page. Pending comments are displayed in a blue bubble. Clicking on a blue bubble activates the Comments Panel allowing moderation of those pending comments. If there are no comments PENDING then the bubble will be RED when moused over with the number of approved comments in the bubble.

These can come in the form of a simple line or two of text to a long discussion with links or pings to other sites. Any comment that is made on the site can be managed in the Comments screen. This screen has information about the comment and various actions can be taken on the comment. The Comments screen is a table of all the comments listed in order received with the newest first. A yellow shaded row means the comment is waiting for moderation before appearing on the site. Each comment line contains the Comment author information, information about the comment itself and the In Response To column for site information about the comment. The Author column can have several pieces of information including the screen name and avatar. Also it can have the commentors website in the form of a URL that can be clicked to visit that site and the email address, also an active link that can clicked to send an email to that address. And the IP address. Clicking on that IP address link will display all the comments originated by that IP address. This allows a Bulk Action to be applied to all comments from that IP address. A nice feature if you want to delete all the comments from that IP. The Comments column has the date and time the comment was submitted. The default article settings are for post notifications. When this box is checked it will notify (or ping) any other sites that you linked to in your post. This is done during the publishing of the post and can slow down posting since a notification attempt is made to all the links in the post before the post is published.. When this box is checked it allows your site to be notified (or pinged) from another site that has linked to your site. These pingbacks and trackbacks will appear in the comments box for that post. This setting can be overwritten for each individual post or page. And when this box is checked it allows comments to be made for a post or page. This can also be overwritten for an individual post or page. When this box is checked it requires all commentators to fill out the name and email field before leaving a comment. Although the names and emails are not verified it helps combat spam. The next box when checked requires all commentators to be a logged in registered user before they can leave a comment. The SITE TITLE is used to identify the site and is also used as the identifying name in syndication feeds like RSS feeds. And the Tagline is the sites byline which is a short phrase describing the site. These two lines are important since in most themes these two lines appear at the top of the website as part of the header and can even be used by search engines. They can be changed at any time without affecting the operation of the site. The WordPress ADDRESS (URL). It is the location of all the CORE WORDPRESS programs. Make sure the complete URL, including the http:// appears as in the initial installation. If you installed WordPress to a sub-directory then the URL should include that sub directory as part of the complete ADDRESS. For instance if I installed WordPress in the sub directory BLOG then the complete URL would be /blog The SITE ADDRESS (URL) is typically the same address as the WORDPRESS ADDRESS (URL). These can be different if you installed the WordPress program files in it's own separate directory ( for instance /blog ) and you wanted to use the simpler homepage address without the /blog then this is where you give WordPress that information. For most installations the WordPress ADDRESS and the SITE ADDRESS are the same. The E-mail ADDRESS is used by WordPress to send you notifications and email alerts about the maintenance and administration of your site. When someone registers at your site then WordPress will send you a notification at this email address. Or if you're moderating comments then this email address will be sent a notification that a comment is being held for approval. The email address you enter here will not be displayed on the the site. These link categories are separate from the post categories used for posts. Each link in wordpress is associated with one or more link categories. This allows links to be grouped with others of similar content. To add a new link category type in a name, this is the name that will appear on the site. You can type a slug or WordPress will create one for you. This is the URL friendly version of the name and it contains lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. This slug must be unique. The descriptions can be entered but it is optional and is not displayed by default but can be used by some themes. Even if a link category description is not used in your theme, you may still find the description useful to help find a certain category with the search link categories option. Click the add new link category button after you've entered all the information. This will save the link and add it to the link category table. Categories are similar to the index pages for a book and can be arranged in a hierarchy with parent and child categories. This helps with navigation and allows posts to be grouped with others of similar content. Categories can be shown in various places on the site. Typically WordPress shows all the Categories to which a given post belongs under that post. When someone viewing your post clicks on one of these Category links, a template page with all the posts belonging to that Category is displayed. Categories can be added when a post is written or they can be created in this screen where they're also managed. To create a Category enter a Name in the name field. This is the name that will appear on the site. The Category slug must be unique. WordPress allows the category name to have a duplicate if you use a unique slug. The "slug" is the URL-friendly version of the name. It's all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers and hyphens. You can assign a slug in the Slug field or leave it blank and WordPress will create it for you. Parent is a drop-down menu. If you want this new category to be a parent then select None. If you want to make this new Category a sub-Category or CHILD then select the Parent here. When someone visits the site and clicks the Category link, all posts in a parent category and all its sub-Categories will be displayed. But when Clicking the a sub-Category link it will only display the posts in that sub-Category. Category Descriptions are optional. Some themes take advantage of Category Descriptions, others do not, so having Descriptions may or may not modify the way Categories are displayed for the site. The two FRONT PAGE DISPLAYS buttons determine if your front page will display your POSTS or a STATIC PAGE as the front page to the site. This is set to Your Latest Posts by default. The front page is a lists of posts with the newest displayed first for reading. This is typical for blog sites. Pages that are created in the Pages Admin screen are used for static content. Selecting the A STATIC PAGE button will display a page with this static content as the front page. The A Static Page has two selections. One for selecting a page for the front page and the second for selecting a page to display the posts. For instance, if you want a welcome page to appear as the front page then create that static page and select it from the drop-down menu. Now that page will appear as the front page but without the posts. You now need to tell WordPress to display your actual posts somewhere else. You can create another page, for instance a page called My Blog and by selecting that page from the drop-down menu your telling WordPress to display the posts on that page. Now you can make a link in a navigation bar so visitors can access the My Blog page. The update screen gives you the ability to upgrade the core WordPress files immediately from the dashboard along with any active or inactive themes and plugins you have installed. While making any of the core updates the site is placed in maintenance mode. While in maintenance mode visitors will see the maintenance message. The maintenance mode can last from a fraction of a second to several minutes depending on your server speed and the extent of the upgrade. In addition you can re-install that version from the dashboard or you can download the zip file of that version if you want to manually install the software. SIZE OF THE POST BOX sets the size of the text editor box. Changing this will increase or decrease the default size of that box. Checking the convert emoticons Formatting box will turn the text and symbols smiles into graphic smiles. The graphics used here were loaded in an images folder when WordPress was installed. Un-check this box and the smiles will remain text and symbols. Checking this box and WordPress will check for valid XHTML code. Invalid XHTML code may cause problems in some browsers. Initially you may want to leave this unchecked since some plug-ins you add later may not work with this box checked. The next choices are default settings for categories used in WordPress (post categories and link categories) and for the default post format setting. If you don't assign a category then it will be placed in the category that is selected here as the default. These can changed later if needed. The Default Post Category is set to Uncategorized. WordPress has built-in image reduction feature. It does not enlarge images. It automatically creates up to three images of different sizes, (thumbnail, medium and large) based on these dimensions. The original image is also preserved, so you can have a total of four image sizes saved for each image you upload. And as long as the original image has either a width or height that is larger than the width or height for any of these setting then that image size will be created. Either the width or the height dimension must be larger that the default set here. For instance if you upload an image with a width of 320 pixels and a height of 200 pixels then a thumbnail and a medium size image will be created but since neither the 320 or the 200 are greater than the 1024 width set here the large image will not be created. The default THUMBNAIL maximum size is 150 x 150 pixels, this can be changed to fit your needs. The check box below the size will crop the THUMBNAIL to this exact size. Un-checking the box will re-size the image based on the proportional width and height of the original image. An image that has the width and height both smaller that the thumbnail width and height set here will only be available in the original size. A 100 x 75 image will only be available in that size. No thumbnail or other image size will be created. The Links table can be sorted by Name, by URL by Visibility or by Rating. Links can also be searched by entering a keyword in the search box and clicking the Search Links button. In addition the table columns can be hidden by clicking the Screen Options tab and selecting the columns you want to show or unselecting the ones you want to hide. The bulk action feature is also available by selecting the Links, then the bulk actions and clicking the Apply button. And Links can be filtered by category selecting a category from the drop down and clicking the Filter button. The Name of the Link is what was entered in the name field when the Link was created. This is an active link and can be clicked to edit that Link. Below the Title are the action links where the to edit or delete this link.
