The default article settings are for post notifications. When this box is checked it will notify (or ping) any other sites that you linked to in your post. This is done during the publishing of the post and can slow down posting since a notification attempt is made to all the links in the post before the post is published.. When this box is checked it allows your site to be notified (or pinged) from another site that has linked to your site. These pingbacks and trackbacks will appear in the comments box for that post. This setting can be overwritten for each individual post or page. And when this box is checked it allows comments to be made for a post or page. This can also be overwritten for an individual post or page. When this box is checked it requires all commentators to fill out the name and email field before leaving a comment. Although the names and emails are not verified it helps combat spam. The next box when checked requires all commentators to be a logged in registered user before they can leave a comment.
