The two FRONT PAGE DISPLAYS buttons determine if your front page will display your POSTS or a STATIC PAGE as the front page to the site. This is set to Your Latest Posts by default. The front page is a lists of posts with the newest displayed first for reading. This is typical for blog sites. Pages that are created in the Pages Admin screen are used for static content. Selecting the A STATIC PAGE button will display a page with this static content as the front page. The A Static Page has two selections. One for selecting a page for the front page and the second for selecting a page to display the posts. For instance, if you want a welcome page to appear as the front page then create that static page and select it from the drop-down menu. Now that page will appear as the front page but without the posts. You now need to tell WordPress to display your actual posts somewhere else. You can create another page, for instance a page called My Blog and by selecting that page from the drop-down menu your telling WordPress to display the posts on that page. Now you can make a link in a navigation bar so visitors can access the My Blog page.
